Introduction

ISH Travel Club is run by International Students House (ISH) in London. It organises cheap trips within the UK and Europe, starting in London. Because these trips are subsidised, you only need to pay 60% of the true cost of the tour. Ticket price includes return transport, accommodation and all scheduled activities. You can only go on these tours if you have become an ISH and ISH Travel Club member. The number of places available for each tour is limited. The aim of the travel club is to encourage friendship between people of different countries and cultures.

How to join ISH and ISH Travel Club

Information about membership of ISH, including the application form, is on the page: http://www.ish.org.uk/membership.html.

Check if you are already a member of ISH. Most of the universities in London and some of the private colleges / study abroad programmes have already paid for all of their students to be members. American students who are in the UK as part of the BUNAC programme are also members.

If you are not already a member of ISH, you can apply for an ISH Individual Student Membership. You can be any nationality (including British) but you must be one of these:
- a full-time student
- a student nurse (or an overseas nurse in the UK who has not yet obtained NMC registration)
- an au pair
- a professional trainee

Some of the benefits of ISH membership are:
- you can join the ISH Travel Club (there is an extra charge for this)
- you can enjoy other free ISH events, such as pub quizzes, karaoke, films, dancing, language lessons
- you can use the ISH bar
- you can have the chance to join some theatre or concert trips in London (paying discounted ticket prices)

In 2007 the costs of being an ISH member are:
- £8 for 3 months
- £10 for 4 months
- £14 for 6 months
- £25 for a year
(note: a 50% discount is given to student nurses and au pairs who join for 4 months or more)

Complete the application form and e-mail it to: membership@ish.org.uk
(alternatively you can pick up a form at the ISH Events office)

If your application is accepted, you must go to the ISH Events office to pay the membership fee and to show proof of what you are doing in the UK. The office is located at: International Students House, 229 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5PN (nearest Tube: Great Portland Street; map)

At the same time you can ask to become an ISH Travel Club member, and you will be given a membership number.
The cost of Travel Club membership is £5 for 3 months. You must renew your membership every 3 months.

UK Tours

A trip to Scotland

UK tours are usually by coach or minibus, and sometimes by train. The cost of day-trips only includes transport. The cost of longer trips includes transport, accommodation and group activities. For a list of trips: click here.

Applying

You do not need to fill in an application form for UK tours. Tickets are on sale one month before the date of travel, so you can apply at any time after this. However, note that there are only a limited number of places available and that these are given to the first people who apply and pay for the trip. You can only apply for a ticket for yourself.

Payment

You can pay in one of these ways:
- In person at the ISH Events Office
- By phone (call 020 7631 8379 and ask for the Travel Club; pay by giving details of your credit or debit card - American Express is not accepted)

Accommodation
Tour prices for trips which involve overnight stays include accommodation. This is usually in a multi-bedded single-sex room in a hostel.

European Tours

European trips usually last 4 days or more, including a weekend. You need to apply for these trips before the deadline shown (see details below). If your application is successful you will be sent full details of the itinerary by e-mail a few days before departure. Travel is normally either by air or by Eurostar train. You should check if you need to apply for a visa. To find out details about the trips: click here.

Applying

If you wish to apply for a place on one of the overseas trips you will need to complete a booking form.
Pick up the application from from the ISH Events Office, or download it from the website.
Complete the form - remember to include your Travel Club Membership Number. There are four possible ways to return the form:
- Take it in person to the ISH Events Office
- E-mail it to: travel@ish.org.uk
- Send it by post to: Chantal Ashley, ISH Events Manager, International Students House, 229 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5PN
- Fax it to: 020 7631 8307

Applications must be received before the deadline, which is usually about 6 weeks before the date of travel.
If you need a visa to travel you should contact the country's embassy in London and ask how long applications take. If it takes more than 6 weeks, tell the ISH Events Office and make sure that you apply for the tour earlier than the deadline.

Selection process

These trips are for small groups (usually about 12 people plus the group leader). Preference will be given to new members of the ISH Travel Club who have not been on another European trip recently. A mixture of people from different parts of the world will be chosen if this is possible. Trips are intended for individuals rather than for groups of people travelling together.

Payment

Your application must include full payment for the trip. You can pay in one of these ways:
- by cheque (payable to International Students House)
- by postal order (payable to International Students House)
- by credit or debit card (note: American Express is not accepted)
Once you have been accepted on a trip you will not be able to obtain a refund if you decide not to travel.

The prices include:
- the cost of flights (or Eurostar trains) to/from the destination
- accommodation during the trip
- the service of a group leader
- planned group sightseeing or activities
- travel insurance
- a contribution towards the first meal with the group

You will need to pay by yourself for meals, souvenirs and personal sightseeing. You will also need to pay for your visa application if you need one.

Visas

You must carry your passport with you on trips outside the UK.

You should check if you need to obtain a visa before leaving the UK. If you need a visa you need to apply for this yourself. If necessary ISH Travel Club may be able to help you by explaining what you need to do or by providing an official letter giving details of the trip and accommodation.

Money

It is usually a good idea to bring some local currency with you as well as carrying a credit/debit card if you have one (check with your card provider if you can use these in the country you are visiting)

Insurance

Basic travel insurance is included in the price of the European tours.

Accommodation

Tour prices include accommodation. This is usually in a multi-bedded single-sex room in a hostel.
