BUYING STUDY MATERIALS

If you want to buy a particular book (for example, one that has been recommended to you), it can be easier to find it if you know its ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Alternatively, find out the book title, the author's name and the name of the publishing company.

One of the cheapest and most convenient ways of buying books and other study materials is using an online store such as Amazon. There is a step-by-step guide to how to buy things using Amazon at: Shop/Company/Amazon.

Recommended books for studying English are shown in relevant pages of the English part of this website.

If you are in the UK and want to see English language study materials in a bookshop, these are some of the general bookshops which often contain a large section for studying English:
- Foyles (in London): http://www.foyles.co.uk
- Heffers (in Cambridge): http://www.heffers.co.uk (part of Blackwell's)
- Blackwell's (in Oxford): http://www.blackwell.co.uk
- Waterstones (in many towns): http://www.waterstones.co.uk
On signs in bookshops, the English language section is often called EFL (English as a Foreign Language) or ELT (English Language Teaching).

There are several bookshops in the UK which specialise in books for teaching or studying English; for example:
- Keltic (in London): http://www.keltic.co.uk
- The English Book Centre (in Oxford): http://www.ebcoxford.co.uk
- Cambridge International Book Centre (in Cambridge): http://www.eflbooks.co.uk
- The English Language Bookshop (in Brighton): http://www.elb-brighton.com
- Bournemouth English Book Centre (in Bournemouth): http://www.bebc.co.uk

If you have a student card (ISIC or NUS card), always ask a bookshop if they offer a student discount (prices are sometimes reduced by 5% or 10%, or some bookshops offer special discounts to students on certain days).

You may also wish to look at the websites of the main publishers of books for studying English, including:
- Longman's: http://www.longman.com
- Macmillan Heinemann: http://www.mhelt.com
- Oxford University Press: http://www.oup.com
- Cambridge University Press: http://uk.cambridge.org

Some publishers will allow you to download a chapter of their books to help you to decide whether you want to buy them. Where this is available, a link to "information" is shown next to the publisher's name.
