PHRASAL VERBS

Phrasal verbs are verbs which contain more than one word, for example "to put down" or "to put up with". These are particularly difficult for learners of English, so it can be useful to have a dictionary or textbook which concentrates only on these types of verbs, with examples of their usage.

IDIOMS

Idioms are groups of words which have a different meaning when you use them together than when you consider the meanings of the individual words. For example: "it is raining cats and dogs" means "it is raining heavily" (there are no cats or dogs falling from the sky!) There are many idioms used in English. Their meanings are likely to confuse learners of English, so it can be useful to study them.
