INTRODUCTION

It may be wise (and cheaper) to book accommodation before you travel, especially at busy times of the year and in places which are holding a local festival.
The websites of the tourist boards or of local tourist information centres usually provide lists of accommodation in the area.
If you are using public transport to travel, remember to ask about the best way to reach the accommodation once you have arrived in the area.

UK HOTELS

Hotels are graded from one star to five stars. These indicate the quality, facilities and level of service. The more stars the higher the quality, level of service and range of facilities offered.

The rate shown at the front desk is known as the rack rate. You can usually pay a much lower rate than this. A travel agent can may be able to offer you a lower corporate rate. You can often obtain lower prices if you book online.
Make sure that you know the price including VAT (value added tax). Check if the cost of breakfast or an evening meal is included in the price.

A hotel which is popular with business people may charge lower prices at weekends, while a hotel which is popular with tourists may charge higher prices at weekends.
