Dano - Korea Sparkling Summer Festival in Trafalgar Square


The DANO - Korea Sparkling Summer Festival is a free event which is organised by the Korean Cultural Promotion Agency.

In 2008 it will be in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 8 June 2008 from 1pm - 8pm.

The pictures below were taken during the 2007 event.

In Korea people celebrate Dano at the time of year when Yang energy is believed to be at its strongest.

The performers paraded around Trafalgar Square.



OPENING CEREMONY

The South Korean Ambassador gave a speech at the opening ceremony. A speech from the Mayor of London was also read out.

BREAKDANCING

Breakdancing has become popular in Korea in recent years. The Korean B-Boys champions are a group called Rivers. They competed on stage with a group from Ireland called The Bad Taste Cru.


SAMULNORI

There was a performance of the traditional form of Korean music is known as samulnori. Four different percussion instruments are played, each one representing a part of nature.


The small gong
represents thunder

The larger gong
is the wind


This hour-glass shaped drum
represents the rain

This drum
is the clouds

MINYO

Minyo is a form of Korean folk song. Typically the words reflect the traditional lives of farmers and rural communities.


JANGGOCHUM

Janggochum is a traditional Korean dance which incorporates drums.


LION MASK DANCE

Another traditional form of dance is the lion mask dance.


FAN DANCE

Buchaechum is a traditional form of Korean dance involving beautiful costumes and the elegant and skillful use of fans.
