It is 1980. The Summer Olympic games in Moscow are about to begin and the international visitors are arriving. The city’s prostitutes have been rounded up and sent away to a small village, 100 miles outside Moscow, until the Olympics are over.
This play is set in a small barn in this village where four of these "ladies of the night" are given temporary accommodation by a local woman. They must adapt to deal with each other and their new surroundings, soon turning to familiar comforts such as vodka, cigarettes and local men. Moving personal stories unfold over the night in this dark and moving drama.
Stars in The Morning Sky is a translation of a play by Alexander Galin and previously has only been performed in Russian.
The Union Theatre is a small intimate theatre, created about 9 years ago in a former warehouse under railway arches at 204 Union Street, London SE1 0LX. It is a short walk here from Southwark Tube station.
This production is running from Tuesday 13 February 2007 until Saturday 3 March 2007 (not on Sundays or Mondays). Performances start at 7:30pm and end at about 9:45pm, with one 15 minute break. Tickets are £10 (£8 for concessions, including students) Tuesday to Friday and £12 (£10 for concessions) on Saturday [credit/debit cards not accepted]. The Box Office number is 020 7261 9876
