SAINT MICHEL

Michael is the archangel mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the Old Testament, leading the fight against the Devil and its followers. To French Catholics he is known is Saint Michel, and there are many images of him in Paris. In Place Saint Michel there is a fountain with a statue showing Saint Michael defeating the Devil.

There are many types of restaurant
in and around Rue de la Huchette

A pedestrianised area between Boulevard Saint Michel and the church St-Séverin (behind Quai St Michel) is full of restaurants and is a popular place for tourists. This is a good place to come if you wish to try traditional French foods such as crêpes, escargots (snails), soupe á l'oignon (onion soup) or a fondue. Typical French desserts include crème brûlée and tarte tatin (apple tart). There are also many other styles of cuisine available.

Caveau de la Huchette (at 5 rue de la Huchette) is a popular Parisian jazz club. There are a number of other bars in this area offering different styles of music and dancing, many of them open until the early hours of the night.

SORBONNE

The Sorbonne is the centre of the University of Paris, established in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon. Initially the university was mainly for the study of theology, and the language of study was Latin, which is why this area became known as the Latin Quarter. This area was where student protests took place in 1968.

JARDIN DU LUXEMBOURG

The Jardin du Luxembourg is the most popular park in Paris. It consists of 25 hectares (60 acres) of gardens in front of the Palais du Luxembourg, a palace which is currently used as the home of the French Senate. Concerts often take place in front of the palace on summer evenings.

The original life-size version of the Statue of Liberty is located on the western side of the park.

PANTHEON

After Louis the Fifteenth recovered from a serious illness in 1744 he decided to build a church. This was completed in 1790. The French Revolution caused its purpose to be changed into a panthéon: a place where great French people are honoured. The words on the front of the building are "Aux grands hommes la patrie reconnaissante", meaning "To the great men, from their greatful country". Among the people who are buried here are Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Voltaire and Emile Zola.
