WILBERFORCE

William Wilberforce was born in Hull in 1759. At the age of 21 he was elected as an MP (Member of Parliament). He was a religious man and became a passionate social reformer. He agreed to become the leader of a campaign for the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and raised the issue in Parliament on many occasions. It took another 20 years before he was able to secure the necessary votes for the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, which became law on 25 March 1807 (following the victory of Nelson against the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Britain controlled the Atlantic sea routes and was able to enforce the ban). Wilberforce continued to work for the improvement of conditions of the slaves in the West Indies. He died in July 1823, one month before the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, setting free all of the slaves in the British Empire.

Memorials to Wilberforce can be found throughout Hull. His statue is on top of a tall pillar on the northern end of Queens Gardens. Wilberforce House Museum is inside the 17th century house where he was born, located on High Street in the Old Town. Close to this is WISE (the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation): a centre for research into slavery, set up by the University of Hull.
