SHOPPING

KaDeWe, opened in 1907, is Europe's second largest department store (after London's Harrods). The name is an abbreviation of Kaufhaus des Westens. The food hall on the 6th floor is particularly famous. The shop is in Tauentzienstrasse, near the U-bahn station Wittenbergplatz.

NIGHTLIFE

Berlin is a good place for nightlife. There are many bars and pubs. Clubs come alive after midnight. At weekends the U-Bahn and S-Bahn continues to run a limited service during the night (note that one-day tickets are only valid until 3am).

TACHELES ARTHOUSE

In Oranienburger Strasse is the Tacheles arthouse. Assisted by state funding, the building is run by students and artists. There are bars and art cinemas, and on the top floor are studios for young artists - visitors are welcome to see the artists at work.

SNACKS

If you are feeling hungry, try a snack at one of the snack bars (the word for snack is Imbiss). One popular inexpensive dish in Berlin is Currywurst: a sausage is sliced, covered in a hot tomato sauce and sprinked on top with curry powder. Bratwurst (a long fried sausage) is another popular snack in Germany.
