Celebrations in London for Pakistan Independence Day

The pictures below were taken during the Pakistan Festival which took place in London on Saturday 28th July 2007. The street parade was followed by a festival in Trafalgar Square. This was a special celebration because in 2007 it was 60 years since Pakistan declared independence on 14th August 1947. Before 1947 Pakistan was part of India, which was under British control at that time. Two regions which had a Muslim majority separated, forming West Pakistan (now known simply as Pakistan), and East Pakistan (this is now Bangladesh).

There is a large Pakistani community in Britain, including over 100,000 people in London.
