Chelsea Flower Show 2006

The world's most famous annual garden and flower show takes place each May in Chelsea (south-west London). It is organised by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society).

The photos below were taken at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show (Tue 23 - Sat 27 May 2006)

Gardens at Chelsea are judged by experts from the Royal Horticultural Society.
The best are awarded a gold medal, after which are the silver gilt, then silver, and then bronze medals.

Winners of the gold medals ...

... include the Daily Telegraph show garden

Gardens come from all corners of the world:

Australia ...

... and New Zealand

Garden Africa

The Kinnaird Garden: A Highland Retreat (Scotland)

The taste of France (Saveurs de France) ...

... and the taste of Britain (NFU)

Water features are an important part of many of the show gardens:

Walking Barefoot with Bradstone

Wormcast Garden: "Growing for Life" at Boveridge House

Cancer Research UK

Jurassic Coast

The "Daisy, Daisy" courtyard garden below was inspired by a famous old music hall song:

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do
I'm half crazy, all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage: I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle made for two

A garden of daisies in a churchyard

A tandem (a bicycle made for two)

Garden statues take many different forms:

A self-pouring watering can

Sculpture from Zimbabwe

Some sculptures are made from grasses:

This cow may have eaten too much grass ...
(National Farmers Union)

... and this lady too!
(The 4head Garden of Dreams)

Artistic skills are in evidence:

A vegetable palette ... (NFU)

... for a floral artist? (Jaci Hogan Art)

There are more than 100 beautiful displays within the Great Pavilion, and also in the Flower Arrangement and Floristry Marquees:

Roses

Aliums

Lilies

In the area close to the flower show, many shops create floral displays outside as part of "Sloane in Bloom". These are also examined by RHS judges. The award for the best display was given to the shoe shop L K Bennett (their display was assisted by Clifton Nurseries):
