Pictures from the celebrations of England's Ashes victory in 2005

On Monday 12th September 2005 England won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years, having beaten the Australians 2-1 over the 5-match series. The following day there were celebrations on the streets of London.

Recommended music to listen to when reading this page: Soul Limbo or Mambo number 5 (opens in a new window)

Women ...

... men ...

... and children line the streets

Andrew Flintoff ("Freddie") was voted man of the series. His bowling, combined with strong batting, helped England to victory.

Freddie takes the applause ...

... and a glass of champage ...

... but how's the hangover?

Kevin Pietersen scored 158 on the last day of the fifth test match, denying the Australians the chance to get level in the series.

Kevin Pietersen ...

... the man with "six" appeal ...

... and a strong voice

The English women's team also won the Women's Ashes, for the first time in 42 years. They joined the men's team for the celebrations.

2005 was not just successful for England's men ...

... but was also the year the women's team won

The open-topped buses travelled from Mansion House to Trafalgar Square, where a large crowd gathered.

Everyone flocks to Trafalgar Square ...

About 75,000 people went to watch the parade.

England won the series 2-1 ...

... with lots of 4s ...

... and a few 6s

One of the most popular songs amongst the English supporters at the test matches has been the hymn "Jerusalem":

(1)
And did those feet in ancient times
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
(2)
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon those clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Amongst those dark satanic mills?
(3)
Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear o clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire
(4)
I shall not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

An opera singer joins in for a few rousing songs ...

... including the hymn "Jerusalem"

Some fans dance in the fountains ...

... others get up onto the stage

Hundreds of flags ...

... fill the square
