With
a little help from my friends (CD single) |
Pop
Idol - Living The Dream (DVD) Studio: Fremantle Home Entertainment Date: 19 January, 2004 |
The original version of this song was by the Beatles. It was written by John
Lennon and Paul McCartney, with the main vocals being sung by Ringo Starr.
For more information about the Beatles, see: Britain/Music/Beatles.
Sam was third and Mark was second in the Pop Idol competition on television
(the competition was won by Michelle McManus, who also reached number 1 with
her song "All this time"). This is their first record.
The song is about how the singer manages the pressures in his life ("gets
by"). Examples of the problems he has to face are days when he sings
badly - "out of tune" - or when his girlfriend isn't with him -
"my love is away". He manages because of the support he receives
("with a little help from my friends"). His "friends"
may refer not only to the people around him, but perhaps also to drugs/alcohol
("get high" normally refers to this), and to sexual partners (the
singer doesn't answer when he is asked repeatedly if it could be "anybody").
The words probably relate to the Beatles themselves, who faced a lot of pressures
while touring and who experimented with sex and drugs in the 1960's.
With a Little Help from my Friends
Sam & Mark |
What would you think if I sang out of tune? I get by with a little help from my friends, What do I do when my love is away? No I get by with a little help from my friends, Do you need anybody? Would you believe in a love at first sight? Oh I get by with a little help from my friends, Do you need anybody? Oh I get by with a little help from my friends, Yes I get by with a little help from my friends, |
Take
me to the clouds above (CD single number 1) |
Take
me to the clouds above (CD single number 2) Artist: LMC vs U2 Label: All Around the World Date: 26 January, 2004 |
This song mixes elements of U2's "With Or Without You" with lyrics
from Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know?" The singer on the radio
version is Rachel McFarlane from Manchester (she also appears on hits from
N-Trance) - other versions include Whitney Houston's original vocals.
The name LMC comes from the first letters of the three studio producers who
made it (Lee Monteverde, Matt Cadman and Cris Nuttall). The song was produced
in LMC's studio above a music shop in Blackburn, and has become popular in
clubs across the UK.
The singer is a girl who is in love with a boy, and feels high when she sees
him (as if taken up "to the clouds above"). But she is shy and hasn't
told him about her feelings. Instead she is telling her girlfriend about him
("there's a boy I know ...") and wants to know her opinion ("tell
me if it's really love"). The verse of the Whitney Houston song which
is not included in this version makes these feelings clearer:
How will I know if he really loves me?
I say a prayer with every heartbeat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you 'cos you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
