The British Christmas number 1 single in 2002 was "Sound of the Underground" by Girls Aloud. This is a new girl group created through the popular television series "PopStars - The Rivals". They sold about 220,000 CDs during the week. Their website is: http://www.girlsaloud.co.uk.

The rival boy band created the television series was One True Voice. Their song "Sacred Trust" was the number 2 single over Christmas. The boys sold about 150,000 CDs during the week.

The song is about someone who is enjoying the loud music and disco dancing at a night-time party in someone's house. "Crank the bass" means to turn up the lower frequencies of the music (the beat). The noise is disturbing the people living nearby ("neighbours banging on the bathroom door"), and the beat can also be heard outside ("in the backstreet lights").

The fourth number 1 single for London group Blue, and the fifth for the British singer Sir Elton John. Elton John first released this song in 1976. The words are written by Bernie Taupin and the melody by Elton John.

The singer did something wrong but found it hard to apologise ("sorry seems to be the hardest word" to say). Now his partner has left ("I wake to find you're not there") and it may be too late to say these things. He wants to "talk it over" and find a way to "make you love me".

Eminem is an American white rap singer. The words to his songs often contain a lot of slang and frequently describe violent and angry situations. This song is part of the soundtrack of the film 8 Mile, in which Eminem stars. The film will be released in the UK in the middle of January. It is partly based around the life of Eminem.

This song is about a young man who is trying to escape from his life of poverty by becoming a rap singer. He is being encouraged to make the most of this chance ("one opportunity", "one shot", "once in a lifetime"). The chorus suggests to the singer: "lose yourself in the music" (concentrate all of your efforts on singing and writing). In the first verse the singer is struggling at the start of his singing career ("he's nervous", "he opens his mouth but the words don't come out"). In the second verse the singer has become successful but is spending all his time touring from "coast to coast" and has grown apart from his family ("barely knows his own daughter"), but is then rejected by his music company (he has become "cold product"). In the final verse he is struggling again to make money and support his wife and baby ("these goddam food stamps don't buy diapers": diapers are American English for nappies). "Mekhi Phifer" (mentioned in this verse) is a young American actor who was given the starring role in a Spike Lee film in 1995 despite having no previous acting experience: he plays Future in this new film (8 Mile).

This song is a love ballad. The singer is in love with a girl, but they are apart at the moment. This song is full of many negatives, probably because they have said some negative things to each other and these words are staying in his head. He misses her very much ("I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away") and wants to get back together ("Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?"). He thinks that she is "the one" for him, and dreams that in future they will get back together and she will become his wife ("I hope you are the one I share my life with").

The man then left her to be with another girl, but that relationship has now finished and the man has got back together with the singer ("Now nothing can take you away from me; We've been down that road before; That's over now"). Dilemma is by the male American rap singer Nelly (from St Louis, Missouri). It is taken from the album Nellyville. The female singer is Kelly Rowland, who is part of the group Destiny's Child.

A dilemma is a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two possibilities, both of which are unpleasant. The woman (Kelly, called K in the song) is having a love affair with the man, Nelly ("she got the hots for me"). But she already has a partner and they have a young child ("she got a man and a son"). The man also has a partner ("but you and me, we got ties for different reasons"). Nelly and Kelly both face the dilemma about whether they should split up with each other or if they should leave their current partners. Kelly tells Nelly that she will still love him, whatever decision she takes ("I love you, I need you"; "no matter what I do, all I think about is you").

Now that's gangsta - behaviour like a member of the mafia (a gangster) (American rap expression).
